    Urea Rush

There is a rush for bulk Urea fertiliser across the eastern seaboard with the forecasted rain next week.

Farmers are rushing to top dress crops with urea to benefit from the predicted rain across the eastern states.

In some areas urea is being applied by plane as fast as they can spread it.

  • Sodium bicarbonate

    Sodium bicarbonate

Sodium bicarbonate is used in the agriculture industry.

    AGRICULTURE
Sodium bicarbonate is used to promote healthy growing conditions while simultaneously limiting fungal and other unwanted growth. Maintaining proper soil pH is vital to producing healthy crops. Sodium bicarbonate is a naturally alkaline compound that helps maintain proper pH to maximize crop production.

Bicarbonate can also be used as an organic substitute for chemical fungicides sprays. Fungal diseases like powdery mildew and black spot can be treated with the natural spray. Mixes like 10g into one litre of water and add 2-4ml of horticultural oil (or veg oil).  Bicarbonate fungal sprays in particular are likely to burn leaves if used on hot days. Full coverage and regular applications are critical to achieve the desired result.

    STOCKFEED
Sodium bicarbonate plays an important role in animal nutrition today. Primarily used as a dairy cow feed supplement, the buffering capability of Natural Soda’s pure and natural feed grade sodium bicarbonate helps stabilize rumen pH by reducing acidic conditions. Our pure and natural sodium bicarbonate is trusted by dairymen and nutritionists due to its excellent buffering capabilities and superior palatability.

Sodium bicarbonate is also fed as a partial replacement for salt in poultry rations. Broiler Operations find that sodium bicarbonate provides an alternative source of sodium that assists with litter control by providing drier litter and a healthier living environment.

  • Triple Super

    Triple Super

Triple Superphosphate (TSP) is a low cost source of phosphorus and is the main substitute for Single Superphosphate in cropping blends. It is a good source of phosphorus in situations where no nitrogen is required, for example, good fallow after clover dominant pasture. It is offer benefits to horticultural blends to increase phosphorus content needs.

TSP does store and flow  through all types of equipment extremely well. TSP flows significantly quicker than other fertilisers, approximately 15 to 20% faster so take extra care when calibrating before sowing.

Triple superphosphate is manufactured by reacting phosphate rock with phosphoric acid, rather than sulfuric acid, as used in the manufacture of single superphosphate. The resultant product has a higher phosphorus content than single superphosphate, but contains very little sulfur. Triple superphosphate consists mainly of monocalcium phosphate, whereas single superphosphate contains monocalcium phosphate and calcium sulfate (gypsum). Triple Superphosphate contains N 0%, P 20.6%, K 0%, S 1.5% and Ca 17%.

In recent years, the use of triple superphosphate has been largely confined to grain crops planted at wide row spacings, in which the fertiliser and seed are applied through the same delivery hose and placed in direct contact with each other in the soil.

Triple super can also be used for the treatment of contaminated soils.

  • Granular Aerial Grade Soft Rock Phosphate

Granular Aerial Grade Soft Rock Phosphate

Pacific Fertiliser releases a new Granular aerial grade phosphate product.

To compliment the existing 2-4mm granular, milled and fine screened soft rock phosphate (SRP) products, the larger 4-12mm granules offer the following:

    • lower cost compared to 2-4mm phosphate granules
    • larger granules assist with product flow in aircraft hoppers and small conical spreaders
    • granular phsophate uses super fine grade natural SRP to make the larger granules so once wet the solubility is still good
    • lower dust compared to powdered product
    • ability to blend it with other granulated products to make a single super equivalent and/or add liquid biology stimulants

  • Phosphorus Buffering Index (PBI)

    Phosphorus Buffering Index (PBI)

The Phosphorus Buffering Index (PBI) approximates the soil’s ability to ‘fix’ phosphorus (P). Soils with a high PBI quickly and tightly lockup P fertiliser making it unavailable to plants. Low PBI soils can’t bind the P, leaving most applied P for plant uptake.

Consultants and Growers should use PBI to improve interpretation of critical Colwell P values. As PBI increases so does the amount of fertiliser P required, as more of the applied P is bound to the soil. Phosphorus is more likely to move deeper into soils a low PBI, more so in high rainfall areas.

Soil PBI is quite stable and only needs testing every few years.

What is low or high PBI?
    PBI Category Rating
    <15 Extremely low
    15 – 35 Very very low
    36 – 70 Very low
    71 – 140 Low
    141 – 280 Moderate
    281 – 840 High
    > 840 Very high
    Source: Moody, 2007

The above PBI ratings will vary depending on cropping regions.

What affects soil PBI? PBI tends to increase as soil gets more clayey. Sands often have a low PBI. PBI can also be higher when soils are:

    • high in reactive iron and/or
    • aluminium calcareous and alkaline.

Most of Australia’s cropping soils have a long history of P application, but only a small proportion of this P is available to the current crop. Generally when P is applied to soil up to 70% will be precipitated or adsorbed by the soil into forms that are unavailable to the current crop.  The crop will access some P from the applied fertiliser as well as from slowly available pools built up over time. The problem is that it is very difficult for plants to access P that is locked up in the ‘soil bank’, and this is particularly true on soils with a high phosphorus buffering index (PBI). For this reason, in most cases annual applications of P at sowing are needed to meet the crop requirements. Where P application has built up a large P bank, a stable response can be obtained with the use of maintenance P dressings – where P input as fertiliser balances P removal in grain crops.

In soil types that have high PBI then guano or soft rock phosphate should be considered due to the citric soluble P (not water soluble P). The higher the citric soluble level of the product the longer it will feed the plant over its growing cycle. Guano and soft rock phosphate are available in blends with other fertilisers, trace elements and amendments.

    S W E E T C O R N V A R I E T Y SEEDS
New Sweetcorn varieties have provided growers with a wider range of options than previously available.
MAX has proven to be a very good variety, featuring excellent seedling vigour for early establishment and strong plant growth
providing cover for the large cobs produced.
SENTINEL is a high quality sister line to Max, with superb eating quality and offering a high level of disease resistance for later in
the season when traditionally growers have had to opt for varieties with lesser eating quality. True 2 cob per plant potential.
GOLDEN SWEET IMPROVED is a variety that demonstrates superior kernel colour, good plant habit and vigour, ideally suited to
    mid season production.
Bicolour varieties such as SAMURAI and MADONNA offer what can only be described as fi rst-rate eating quality that is seeing
market demand increasing every year. Growers should be aware of the need to exclude pollen from SE and maize type corns or
    reduced quality may result.

    T U R F & L A W N G R A S S E SEEDS

Seed for leguminous green manure crops such as cow peas, clovers, medics and vetch should be inoculated with
Rhizobium bacteria before sowing. This helps the crop establish good levels of root nodulation and nitrogen fixation.

The biggest downside to growing green manure crops is that they do not provide the grower with an immediate
cash income, though the long term benefits are evident.
It is important that flowering crops should be dug-in just before flowering and cereals before producing grain heads,
this is to ensure against undesirable seed banks from forming. Crops will decompose in 4 – 6 weeks in the warmer
months, but may take longer in Winter.
