Granular Gypsum
Pacific Fertiliser produce a granular gypsum product suitable for air seeder and aircraft application.
The 2-4mm granular gypsum is made locally from blending various domestic sources of natural gypsum together to make consistent and stable particles. We then re screen the product after granulation to ensure there are no fines present.
For sport turf applications we also produce a 1-2mm gypsum product.

Triple Super Alternatives
Triple Superphosphate (TSP) product is no longer stocked in large volumes in Australia and TSP is mainly used in blends.
The products that are being used in its place are TriplePlus/Tresspass fertiliser (TSPS), Double Super Phosphate (DSP or PastureKing), Monoammonium phosphate (MAP) and Single superphosphate (SSP).
Triple superphosphate, while not chemically pure, can be thought of as monocalcium phosphate (MCP), which has the formula Ca(H2PO4)2.H2O.
Single superphosphate is comprised of approximately two-thirds gypsum (CaSO4.2H2O) and one-third MCP.
The chemical formula for MAP is NH4H2PO4
MCP and MAP both dissociate to release H2PO4+ ions, so in this respect there is no difference in the products.
MAP and MCP vary in their solubility in water:
- MAP 37 kg/100 L
- MCP 2 kg/100L.
The gypsum in single superphosphate (SSP) makes this product less soluble and more difficult to dissolve. Gypsum has a solubility of 0.26 kg/100 L, about one-eight of that for MCP. Gypsum also has no effect on soil pH.
The solubility of gypsum is comparable to that of Burnt and Hydrated Lime, and is much higher than that of ground limestone:
- Calcium Carbonate (Lime) CaCO3 0.0013 kg/100 L
- Calcium Oxide (Burnt or Quick Lime) CaO 0.13 kg/100L
- Calcium Hydroxide (Slaked or Hydrated Lime) Ca(OH)2 0.17 kg/100 L
Superphosphate SSP (8.8% P)
This is produced by treating rock phosphate with sulfuric acid, and is the most commonly used phosphorus fertiliser.Double superphosphate DSP (17.5% P with 5% S)
Phosphoric acid is used instead of sulfuric acid in manufacture.Triple Super Sulphur TSPS (18% P) with 10% S)

These two fertilisers are produced by treating phosphoric acid with ammonia.Rock phosphate (10% P)
Crushed & mill soft rock phosphate is sometimes used as a fertiliser but is very insoluble. Reactive phosphate rock (RPR) can be more soluble than crushed rock phosphate where there is acid soil/sulphur. -
Boron
Boron is a micronutrient that is essential to plant growth. The natural trace element Boron is involved in cell division and development and deficiencies are often seen as stunting and deformation of growing points in plants. Adequate boron is necessary for proper absorption of macronutrients.
Overfarming, extremely in hot and cold weather conditions, drought, an overabundance of rainfall or irrigation, sandy soils—all these factors can reduce the amount of boron available to crops.
Care must be taken with Boron applications as the band between deficiency and toxicity can be narrow, hence seek qualified advice on boron use and rates of application. While soil analysis can give an indication of boron status of the soil dried leaf analysis of the crop provides more accurate data for decision making.

Cowra Spreading
Just getting ready for some fertiliser spreading work in Cowra.
Spreader Accuracy:
Contract Spreader’s Agrispread AS120T and Case 335 tractor is fitted with Trimble system and AS controller that provide strong data feedback and control during operation. It allows agronomists and farmers to send variable rate application maps to the machine. I think will see a quick take up of variable rate lime and gypsum spreading to save farmer input costs and increase productivity.
The system also offers real-time data reporting providing scrutiny of where the spreader is and check its application rates and other diagnostics. It gives the grower absolute confidence in what the spreading contractor is doing and when it is doing it and gives us complete oversight of the job.
With a large 16m3 hopper and 36m spread width on urea, the AS120T spread can cover a lot of country in a day.

Treatment of Acid Sulphate Soils
Acid sulphate soil (ASS) is the common name given to soils and sediments containing iron sulfides, the most common being pyrite. When exposed to air due to drainage or disturbance, these soils produce sulphuric acid from reacting with oxygen, often releasing toxic quantities of heavy metals to the wider environment.
Excavation of potential acid sulphate soils (PASS) can lead to the creation of actual acid sulphate soils (AASS). To reduce the possibility of potential acid sulphate soils becoming actual acid sulphate soils, there are four main management techniques used to minimise this possibility and its effects:
– Minimising disturbance
– Neutralisation
– Reclaiming land
– Water coverIn many cases minimising disturbance is not possible especially in relation to construction projects. Reclaiming land and water cover are based on removing the possibility of oxygen coming into contact with the sulphate within the soil, but in many circumstances is not possible. Therefore neutralisation is the only management technique available in many situations where acid sulphate soil is present.
The way in which acid sulphate soil is neutralised is relatively simple in that a highly basic material, such as lime, is mixed with the acid sulphate soil. The amount of lime required to be mixed with the acid sulphate soil is determined by analysing a sample of soil to calculate actual acidity and relating the amount of lime required to be added to effectively neutralise the soil.
In many cases of acid sulphate soil treatment, agricultural lime (Ag lime) is used to neutralise the soil. However, there are other reagents available, which are effective such as hydrated lime, mixtures of hydrated lime and Ag lime, and also lime slurries, which can be added as a liquid.
Pacific Fertiliser can supply and deliver bulk or bagged lime products and other products such as hydrated lime to address your acid sulphate soil issues in NSW, QLD and VIC. We also have equipment and staff to spread, incorporate and mix materials into the treatment areas.
We can work in accordance with your ASS Management Plan (generally provided to you by soil analysis contractor such as SESL etc) and ensure that the correct addition rates of lime (or other product) with homogenous mixing into the soil at correct depths, to provide the best result on your project.
