  • How Much Fertiliser to Use

    How Much Fertiliser to Use

Fertilisers have an essential role in feeding a growing global population. Nitrogen and phosphorous based fertilisers are used by farmers and croppers throughout the world to grow food and pastures for livestock.

Fertiliser is a large input cost for the farmers with the government’s ABARES coming up with the following average figures:

    • ~ 10 per cent of a cattle farmer’s annual cash costs are used on fertiliser,
    • ~ 16 per cent of a sheep farmer’s expenses are used on fertiliser, and
    • ~ 33% of a cropper’s bills are used on fertiliser

While this seems like a large percentage of costs, farmers buy fertiliser to for increase yields and return per hectare.

According to a recent report by the United Nations, the world will need to grow 70% more food, as measured by calories, to feed the global population of 9.6 billion in 2050. So the agriculture industry faces a great challenge and opportunity to sustainably increase food security and improve how we look after the agricultural land.

Pacific Fertiliser continues to look at sustainable/organic fertilisers alternatives and the industry is working together on increasing mainstream fertilisers efficiencies. Australia is right up there in the world when it comes to fertiliser efficiencies in Agriculture.

Some interesting graphs below on how fertiliser helps feed the world.

  • Ratoon Cane Crops

    Ratoon Cane Crops

Management of the ratoon cane is important because the bulk of cane supply in any one year is from ratoon crops. This represents about 75% to 80% of cane supplied to Queensland mills. The length of the ratoon cycle varies, but a plant crop and three ratoon crops are typical for the Queensland industry.

The success of a ratoon crop is dependent on the condition of the cane stool after harvest, the health of the soil and the growth of the ratooning plant. Many factors can influence ratoon growth. These include the effect of the preceding harvest operation, soil moisture, variety being grown, nutrient availability, weed competition, pests and diseases, equipment traffic and row profiles.

    Typical Ratoon Cane Fertiliser blends:

    • PF 50-50  is a Urea MOP blend
    • PF 50-50  is a Slow Release Urea MOP blend . The urea polymer or carbon coated)
    • PF 140S  is a fertiliser blend, containing Urea, SOA and MOP
    • Cal-Gran Fertiliser range (cal-gran 50/50, cal-gran 130, cal-gran 130, cal-gran 140, cal-gran 150, cal-gran 130)
    • Tunza Sugar Fertiliser Range (Tunza 141, Tunza 151, Tunza 161, Tunza 301 )
    • Numerous tailored blends to meet your fertiliser and amendment requirements in one pass.

Slow Release Urea fertilisers and blends are generally applied in ratoon cane using stool-splitters or double disc openers, with the fertilisers applied in the centre of the hill or side dressed either side of the plant row into the hill. Slow Release Urea fertilisers and blends can also be side dressed in plant cane where a significant amount of nitrogen is needed and there is a risk of leaching, denitrification or run off.

  • Urea Price Rises

    Urea Price Rises

The good run of low urea prices has ended with demand and exchange rates driving the current price increases.

General urea prices were stagnant at $440/t for the first part of the year, but in the past few weeks we have seen the price close in on $500/t.

New urea shipments are due from overseas and the price has gone up at these ports. An example is increases from $310 up to $380/t FOB at Middle Eastern ports.

  • MKP Fertiliser

    MKP Fertiliser

Monopotassium phosphate aka MKP  fertiliser (KH2PO4), is a soluble salt of potassium and the dihydrogen phosphate ion which is generally used as a fertilizer, a food additive and a fungicide.

It contains both phosphorus (P) and potassium (K). When used in fertiliser mixtures with urea and ammonium phosphates, it minimizes escape of ammonia by keeping the acidity at a relatively low level.

The product is a fully water soluble form of phosphorus and potassium fertiliser making it particularly suited to a wide range of horticultural crops. It comes as a free flowing, fine crystalline powder which dissolves quickly when mixed in water.

MKP fertilisers are suited to applications through fertigation systems – hydroponics, drip systems, low throw sprinklers, centre pivots, spray units and misters.

    TriplePlus Fertiliser (aka Tresspass fertiliser)

Is a compound fertiliser of Triple super phosphate and mircofine sulphur (TSPS fertiliser).  The TSPS product contains 10% S (mainly elemental sulphur) within the fertiliser granule.

Available in Australia as a standard 0-16-0-7   and is being well received in the eastern ranges pastoral country as a high analysis phosphorous source.

It can be blended with extra sulphur to achieve the same P:S ratio as single super, by blending an extra 11% sulphur bentonite to give 0-16-0-20

At pasture establishment a small amount of nitrogen can go a long way. Supplying some nitrogen in conjunction with phosphorus stimulates early growth for seedlings which assists with quicker establishment and provides greater seasonal production of dry matter.
